New Opportunities for Local Economic Development

With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Montenegro’s industry virtually halted. To this day, Montenegro is still reeling from two decades of turmoil, and as a result, suffers from a high rate of unemployment. In particular, the predominantly rural region of northern Montenegro is the least developed part of the country. For years, the private sector has faced a difficult business environment, with limited investment and few employment opportunities for the region’s residents.

In addition, basic infrastructure is inadequate, local governmental institutions are weak, and the region’s core economic sectors of agriculture and tourism are underdeveloped.

We are implementing the Community Revitalization through Democratic Action—Economy program to assist Montenegrins to build a stronger economy based on citizen participation and targeted economic development, with special focus on the tourism and agriculture industries.
